What is Anxiety?

If you’ve ever been told that you “worry too much” or that you “over think things” it may cause you to play this on repeat at night when you should be sleeping.

Anxiety is natural.

The brain does a very good job at protecting us from real or perceived danger. Sometimes our brain can go into overdrive, interpreting situations such as going out to a party with friends as dangerous which can result in high levels of stress hormones (cortisol) and ephinephrine (Adrenaline). These stress hormones are necessary for human survival. Think of it as if you were a cavedweller being chased by a lion- we need stress to kick us into action because the threat to our survival is real.

But when our brain cannot differentiate real threat from perceived threat- this is when an anxiety disorder can develop.

Do you often have thoughts on replay at night or during quiet times?

This could be a sign that your anxiety level has become too high and that you need additional brain tools to reclaim the ‘thinking parts’. When anxiety is too high the thought take control the mind and it shows up in replaying conversations over and over, self doubt about things you said in previous conversations, worry that you said ‘too much’ or didn’t talk enough. When thoughts start to loop and the rumination sets it this is a great time to reach out for support. We specialize in support for high anxiety in situations just like these! Anxiety Treatment in Austin Texas

At Past and Present Therapy, our clinicians utilize a wide-variety of tools and treatments to help ease the stress and discomfort that accompanies too much anxiety.

While there are several types of Anxiety treatment available for adults, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for symptoms of anxiety. Our Clinicians use CBT on a case by case basis with adult and teen clients who wish to identify negative thought patterns and beliefs. At this time we do not feel it is an affirming treatment for Autistic adults.

CBT is a structured, time-limited therapy that can help some clients identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to their high levels of worry and anxiety. Through this therapeutic process, individuals learn to recognize how their thoughts influence their feelings and actions. By developing healthier thought patterns, clients can reduce anxiety symptoms and improve their overall emotional well-being.

Many adults tell us they feel relief from high anxiety symptoms (over thinking, rumination, avoidance, procrastination, perfectionism) in 10-12 weeks.

Our therapists create a supportive and non-judgmental environment where you can explore anxiety triggers and develop better coping strategies. With an emphasis on personal empowerment, clients are encouraged to practice new skills both in and out of sessions, fostering greater resilience and confidence in facing life's challenges.

Whether dealing with generalized anxiety, social anxiety, or phobias, therapy sessions are tailored to meet your unique needs, ensuring effective progress towards anxiety management and a more fulfilling life.
